Newcrest Mining joins campaign in support of International Students during COVID-19

Newcrest Mining has donated $10,000 towards Somos21 and E-WA Rotary’s Pandemic Relief for International Students.

Newcrest is the largest gold producer listed on the Australian Securities Exchange and one of the world's largest gold mining companies. This donation is part of Newcrest’s A$20 million Community Support Fund, established to help their host communities navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

Joining fellow corporate donors in Big River Gold and First Quantum Minerals, Newcrest’s donation will provide supermarket vouchers for international students suffering from financial stress.

A recent survey of international students led by Professor Alan Morris of the University of Technology Sydney, found an increase in the number of respondents who had skipped meals, had pawned something to obtain money or had trouble paying for electricity on time when compared to 2019 results. Additionally, six in 10 respondents agreed or strongly agreed financial stress was affecting their studies and 63% of students also felt lonelier since the pandemic.

Diana, an international student living in Victoria, was grateful for the support offered by Somos21 and Newcrest. “By far this voucher has been the most important help we have received. It has allowed us to buy essentials and care for our health during our first winter overseas. Thank you for caring for us.”
