Colombian curator named for Sydney's 2022 biennale

By Nick Galvin

Colombian curator Jose Roca has been appointed artistic director of the 2022 Biennale of Sydney and can't wait to move here to work on what he has promised will be a "biennale of our times".

"Let's say I have my bags packed outside my door and I'm just waiting for the travel ban to be lifted," said Roca, from his home in Bogota. "Usually, biennial curators when they are not from that place go there every now and then – but in this case I thought it was important to go to Australia and live there for the entire duration of the project as a gesture of total commitment and also to limit air travel."

Roca has a lengthy resume, having curated major art events in South America, the US and the UK. He also runs a contemporary art space called FLORA ars+natura in Bogota that examines the links between art and nature.

"It's not tree-hugging," he said. "It's more about the political implications."
