Bolivia’s students will not fail this year due to the critical situation caused by the new coronavirus pandemic, Education Minister Victor Hugo Cárdenas announced on Sunday.

“This year there will be no disapproval from any student at pre-school, elementary and high school levels,” said the minister at a news conference.

He justified the decision by the situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, “it is not permissible to talk about student failure”, he said.

Teachers and parents of students question the suspension of face-to-face classes and the move to distance education due to the high number of homes that lack internet connection or their cost at a time when family income has declined due to decreased activity economical.

Rural teachers started on Friday in Lahuanchaca (125 km from La Paz) a march to the government headquarters to demand a government retreat and the resignation of the Minister of Education.

“The leaders’ exhibitions leave the educational field and enter dangerously into the territory of politics, questioning the government and destabilizing democratic coexistence,” said Cárdenas.

Leaders of the Bolivian Operational Center, the country’s main union organization, linked to former president Evo Morales, called for a protest to defend the public character of health and education for Tuesday.

Cárdenas regretted that the teachers did not respond to his invitation to dialogue with the mediation of the Catholic Church and that they insist on the “immediate return to face-to-face classes”, when the pandemic curve is on the rise.

COVID-19 has so far left 1,754 dead in Bolivia and more than 47,000 contagions.

The minister warned of the possibility of an early closure of the school year if union pressure persists.

“If the stubbornness and the polarization of the teaching leadership continue, the scenario for the end of the school year is an alternative,” he said.
