Panic Purchases Of Toilet Paper Due To Increased Cases Of COVID-19 In Melbourne

Jun 25, 2020

One of Australia's major supermarkets has seen an increase in toilet paper sales following the recent increase in the number of coronavirus infections in Victoria.

The state has recorded eight consecutive days of COVID-19 infections. The state government has had to reestablish some social distancing restrictions and has named eight municipalities identified as critical points of contagion.

Social networks are talking about an increase in demand for basic products in supermarkets located in areas identified as high community transmission areas.

  • Woolworths in Victoria confirms an increase in demand for toilet paper.
  • Victoria has recorded eight consecutive days of COVID-19 infections.
  • Supermarkets said to closely monitor the levels of all their products in the coming days.

Woolworths confirmed an increase in demand for toilet paper, but has assured customers to remain calm as "all but a small number of stores" have normal supplies.

"Yesterday we saw a high demand for toilet paper in a small number of Melbourne stores," a Woolworths spokesperson told SBS News.

"We have a ton of supplies in our distribution centers and we will replenish the shelves in those stores quickly.

"We will continue to closely monitor the levels of all our products in the coming days, and we will ask customers to buy only what they need."

The phenomenon generated a 24 percent increase in grocery retailers' incomes in March, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The scenes of shoppers emptying the supermarket shelves generated strong criticism from the Prime Minister of Australia.

"It's ridiculous, the behavior runs counter to what it means to be Australian and it must stop," said Scott Morrison.

"It is neither logical nor useful and it has been one of the most disappointing things I have seen among Australians in response to this crisis."

Since then, irrational demand has decreased, so Woolworths and Coles have removed their limits on product purchases.
