Residents of Victoria will have to abide by the restrictions imposed in this state for four more weeks as a result of the announcement by the premier, Daniel Andrews, of the state of emergency in his jurisdiction in order to stop the spread of the new coronavirus. The state of emergency, which was due to expire on April 13 at midnight, will be extended until May 11 and is likely to "extend beyond (that date)," Andrews announced at a press conference in Melbourne.
Victoria, one of the states with the highest number of infections after New South Wales, has more than 1,200 COVID-19 infections of the more than 6,290 cases that occur in the country.
Australia also recorded its 57th death from the pandemic last night. The latest victim, 74, a resident of South Australia, is a passenger on the Ruby Princess cruise ship, the country's largest source of infections that landed in mid-March with 2,700 passengers.
Andrews also highlighted that the decrease in new cases is "strong evidence that our strategy is working", although he stressed that we must not let our guard down because the situation "can change quickly" by implying that the restrictions for control the pandemic.
Likewise, the Labor politician from Victoria reported that the passengers who returned from Uruguay after being stranded for 15 days on the cruise ship Greg Mortimer will be confined for 14 days in a hotel and that he spoke with the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, to confirm that 9 New Zealanders are heading to this country.
The recommendations in Australia is that people should stay at least 1.5 meters away from each other and meetings are limited to two people unless they are with their family or home.
If you think you may have contracted the virus, call your doctor (do not visit) or contact the National Coronavirus Health Information Hotline at 1800 020 080. If you are having difficulty breathing or are experiencing a medical emergency , call 000.
